There’s no one new around you

Pronoun / There’s No One New Around You / 2016 / RAR-012

Back in May of 2019 I got to catch American Football live for the first time ever at Union Transfer in Philadelphia following the release of LP3. It was a truly amazing show, including the opener, Pronoun. Usually when I see an opener on the bill of a show, I try to check out their work so I know what I can expect going in. But from time to time I go in blind, and this was one of those times. I ended up leaving with a new indie pop band added to my Spotify.

Pronoun is Alyse Vellturo’s one woman band project based out of her bedroom in Brooklyn, New York. Upon graduating from Berklee College of Music, Vellturo started working as a music manager and distributer before eventually starting to create her own music. In 2016 she made her debut with her first EP There’s No One New Around You - a short, sweet, and catchy four tracks fully recorded in her bedroom with all instrumentation done by her with the exception of the drums (she used a drum machine). Opening track a million other things is the best of the bunch - Alyse really locked down the guitar tone and layered riffs on this one. With just the addition of bass, drum machine, and her hopeful lyrics, the track sounds bigger then this typical rock outfit setup. It’s this simplicity throughout the EP that I can really commend. Plus you’ll be singing this one in your head for days after a listen - “But you gotta come home. Come back baby, come back first. Gotta come home first. Come back baby, even if it hurts”. Following tracks til your legs give up and just cuz you can’t throw some synthesizer into the mix to show off her pop influence. Closer snowed in // there’s no one new around you even brings in some syncopated pads around her lyrical depression of not getting any new matches on Tinder.

There’s no one new around you was produced, written, and recorded by Alyse Vellturo. If you enjoy this EP, check out her first LP i’ll show you stronger - tracks run and stay slap so hard on there.
